Regional & Business Aircraft

Regional and Business Aircraft

The Regional and Business Aircraft group provides expert analysis, design and systems integration that focus on high accuracy, high reliability and low maintenance. The group adapted the Sensor Systems, Goodrich Corporation SmartProbe™ to its first non-military application on the Embraer ERJ-170.

Typical customers of the Regional and Business Aircraft group include Bombardier, Embraer, Gulfstream, Raytheon and virtually all regional commuter airlines.

The Regional and Business Aircraft group provides analysis and system optimization with expertise in heater technology, icing, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical/electrical design, software and integration with sensing technology.

Through superior systems integration, the group delivers performance as follows:

10-9 undetected failure rate

  • Stall protection
  • Air data
  • Ice management (including bleed air) - primary
  • Current sensors and switches (probes - air data)

10-7 undetected failure rate

  • Anti-skid brakes
  • Nose wheel steering
  • Cabin/cargo doors
  • Landing gear electronics

In addition, the Regional and Business Aircraft group delivers superior solutions that exceed accuracy requirements established by governing organizations in the following areas: pitot and pitot-static, total air temperature, angle of attack, altitude, air data pressure, current monitors, total ice management, wing temperature sensing, valves and ducting, windshield wiper and heater controller systems and many others.

Recognizing the importance of after-market service to the operators of regional and business aircraft, the group has improved its after-market program. A European repair center in England increases convenience and saves time for customers in Europe and Asia. Improved distribution channels, spare parts availability and repair turn times ensure faster results and minimize costs associated with downtime.

Helicopters & Military Aircraft

Helicopters and Military Aircraft

The Helicopters and Military Aircraft group consists of products and systems for helicopters (commercial and military) and military aircraft (manned and unmanned). The group specializes in measuring aerodynamic performance or characteristics such as air data, temperature, angle of attack, icing and current monitoring. The group also provides high-performance windshield wiper/washer systems.

Historically the group supplied components that sensed something. It has refocused on integration and the delivery of complete systems that sense something, then act. Examples are entire air data systems, the SmartProbe™ and the SmartPort™.

The Helicopters and Military Aircraft group is distinguished by its track record in four key areas:
  • Low observability components
  • Understanding of aerodynamics
  • MEMS development of aerodynamics
  • Electro-optics
  • In-house manufacture of pressure sensors in clean room environment
  • Proprietary, highly reliable heater technology

Higher levels of system integration lead to easier installation and lower maintenance and operating costs. In order to meet these objectives, the group is exploring new technologies for total ice management, stall protection and advanced non-intrusive air data systems.

The Helicopters and Military Aircraft group continues to work with its customers on a partnership basis to design and build the optimal total solution to meet operating requirements.

Space

Propulsion and Space

The Propulsion and Space group has focused for many years on providing reliable sensing measurement solutions for jet engines and space vehicles in areas of temperature and pressure.

Typical customers of the Propulsion and Space group include General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce Allison, Rockwell, Lockheed Martin, Arianespace, Rocketdyne, Aerojet, Hughes and JPL.

By focusing on high-value, low-cost sensing solutions for jet engines, the Propulsion and Space group continues to help customers meet objectives for efficiency and durability. Efficient sensors have a positive effect on fuel consumption. Durable sensors maintain reliability in spite of daunting environmental factors.

Given that sensors on space vehicles must operate in exceptionally demanding, low gravity conditions, they must be highly reliable. Sensors from Sensor Systems have proven their reliability over decades of participation on nearly every space mission since the beginning of the space program.

In order to participate fully in the primary accuracy engine sensor (FADEC) area, Sensor Systems built a facility to design, test and manufacture products that meet or exceed rigorous standards.

Sensors for space applications are becoming smaller, lighter and less expensive without compromising performance. Through ongoing innovation, the Propulsion and Space group supports long-term accuracy by packaging the sensor and its electronics in a way that maximizes performance integrity. This approach minimizes problems with connectors and wiring.

Goodrich MEMS

Goodrich MEMS

Sensor Systems designs, develops and produces micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) for high-performance sensors and actuators. The use of MEMS technology packs more functionality and performance per unit volume and cost than current alternatives. Goodrich sustains a competitive advantage by combining proprietary technologies innovatively. These technologies include electro-mechanical design, micro-machining, electronics and packaging.

MEMS technology has paved the way for the manufacture of mass quantities of precision mechanical parts with micron dimensions. In addition to making sensing products smaller, lighter, more reliable and less expensive, MEMS technology has provided precise solutions for applications such as:
  • Multiple pressure measurements across complex surfaces
  • Silicon strain gages
  • Data acquisition and transmission
  • High-performance pressure measurements in high line or common mode pressure
  • Heat management
  • Spray performance
  • Material compatibility for pressure sensing in the presence of corrosive, aggressive liquids and gases
  • High performance switches and actuators
